Indian Institute of Science is the best institution of higher education in India. It was the brainchild of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. He conceived the idea of setting up an institute in India for scientific learning and got massive support from H.H. Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore, who donated land for the project. Unfortunately, Tata died in 1904 before the institute was established on 27 May 1909.
In more than 100 years of its existence, IISc has now more than 40 departments spread across six divisions: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Interdisciplinary Research, Mechanical Sciences, and Physical and Mathematical Sciences. It has a new campus at Challekere in Chitradurga, Karnataka.
